Teaching Philosophy
I very much believe in working with the koto and shamisen not just as “traditional” instruments, but more so as “musical” instruments capable of conveying deep emotion and a meaningful message. As a registered shihan instructor with the Sawai Koto Institute, I play ikuta style koto. I feel that it is important to learn not just the modern repertoire, but also to gain an understanding of the traditional jiuta music which forms the roots of contemporary ikuta playing.  I also try to meet students where they are in their musical learning, and focus on a good balance between solo and ensemble music. Providing experiences to help sutdents develop a broad range of skills in a well-rounded way is my main goal. 

指導理念　私は、箏と三味線を単なる「伝統楽器」としてではなく、深い感情と意味のあるメッセージを伝えることのできる「音楽的な楽器」として捉えることを大切にしています。沢井箏曲院の師範として、生田流の箏を演奏しています。現代曲のレパートリーを学ぶだけでなく、現代の生田流演奏の根底をなす伝統的な地歌音楽への理解を深めることも重要だと考えています。また、生徒一人ひとりの音楽的な学びの段階に寄り添い、独奏と合奏のバランスを大切にした指導を心がけています。生徒が幅広い技術をバランスよく身につけられるような経験を提供することが、私の最大の目標です。

Repertoire
There is a wide variety of solo and ensemble nusic by Sawai Tadao and Sawai Hikaru, and it might be said that these compositions are at the core of my teaching repertoire. As the Sawai school has roots in the Miyagi school, I know and teach many peices by Miyagi Michio as well as other modern composers. Traditional/classical works from the jiuta genre are another area I enjoy introducing and helping students grow in. Of course, modern arrangements of popular tunes for both ensemble and solo are also great to work on.

レパートリー 　沢井忠夫・沢井比河流による多彩な独奏・合奏曲があり、これらの作品が私の指導レパートリーの中心をなしていると言っても過言ではありません。沢井流は宮城流を源流としているため、宮城道雄の作品をはじめ、その他の現代作曲家による楽曲も数多く指導しています。地歌の伝統的・古典的な作品も、生徒に紹介し共に学んでいくことを楽しんでいる分野のひとつです。もちろん、独奏・合奏を問わず、人気曲の現代的なアレンジ作品に取り組むことも大いに歓迎しています。

Lesson System
In general, I meet with students twice a month. This can be in person at my studio in Meguro (about a five minute walk from JR Meguro Station), or online. Lessons last approximately one hour and are scheduled about one month in advance. It is possible to set up a trial lesson. レッスン制度　基本的に、月2回のペースでレッスンを行っています。目黒のスタジオでの対面レッスン（JR目黒駅から徒歩約5分）、またはオンラインレッスンのいずれかをお選びいただけます。レッスンは約1時間で、およそ1ヶ月前にスケジュールを調整いたします。体験レッスンも受け付けております。料金やスケジュールなど、詳細についてはcurtispattersonkoto@gmail.comまでお気軽にお問い合わせください。

Obtaining a Koto
For those new to the instrument, I can help with purchasing a new or second hand koto or shamisen. I will of course also assist with obtaining koto picks, a bachi (plectrum) and any other necessary equipment. Restringing may be needed with second hand kotos and I can introduce technicians to work on instruments as well.

楽器の入手について　箏や三味線を初めて手にされる方には、新品・中古を問わず、楽器の購入についてもサポートいたします。もちろん、箏爪・撥（ばち）その他必要な用具の入手についてもお手伝いします。中古の箏の場合は糸の張り替えが必要になることもありますが、楽器の調整・修理を行う職人をご紹介することも可能です。
