Curtis Patterson - Koto 箏: News

July - an exciting month - August 1, 2009

July was a great month. It included performing at a big event with Bruce in Osaka as well as sharing the stage in Niigata with Ikuseikai friend Hiroko Fujisaki and her duo partner Toru Kujiraoka. Great audiences at both venues. I especially enjoyed the Tako-yaki in Osaka and meeting so many young Hogaku players in Niigata.

The highlight of the month however, was taking 19 elementary and junior high school koto students from Yokohama International School (where I teach twice a week) to the All Japan Koto Contest in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Pref.
We were so proud of our sixth grade ensemble which played extremely well given the pressure. The competition was tough however and a prize was not to be. But just wait 'till next year!
Four of our seven soloists passed the preliminaries and moved on to the finals. As if it wasn't enough of a treat to see Leo Konno (6th grade) win 2nd prize (Silver Award) in the elementary division, Yuji Mitsuta (3rd year junior high) took 1st prize (Gold Award) in his group.
YIS is beginning to make its name in the world of koto in Japan!
I love seeing these students develop and am so excited to be a part of it all.

New Recording - December 1, 2008

It looks as if the material Bruce and I recorded this past summer with Susan Osborn will be available on CD in the spring. As our tour with Susan at Cherry Blossom time this year was such a great success, we are planning another for spring 2009! Hope to see you along the way.

Susan Osborn in Japan - February 17, 2008

There has been some great news from our new friend, Susan Osborn. Bruce and I had a wonderful time playing at her gallery space on Orcas Island (in Puget Sound, between Seattle and Vancouver) January 12. Susan joined us for a tune or two - the vibe was great and one thing led to the next. Now Susan will be coming to Japan for the cherry blossom season, and plans to join us for some of our Sakura Zensen concerts! It will be a super celebration of the Sakura - we hope you can be a part of it!

Bruce and I had two great tours last year - The Sakura Zensen Tour in the spring, and then the autumn Momiji Gari (Maple Leaf) Tour. Between the tours and our other gigs, we played on a total of more than 50 stages last year.
Now we are planning our Sakura Zensen 2008 Tour. We plan to be in Kansai, possibly getting as far as Hiroshima and Yamaguchi, and also will of course be playing here in the Kanto area, followed by venues up in Fukushima, Yamagata and Iwate. Please check the calendar page for schedule updates as things fall into place.
